Toys are available in countless variations for all ages – pedagogically more or less valuable. Young parents are often at a loss when asked: What should my child play with? The ages on the toy often give only very rough indications, because each child is developed differently.
Added to the age of the requirements for pedagogical value, safety and health safety – and then there is also the personal opinion of the parents themselves: In some families plastic toys are taboo, others refuse weapons for the child simply off. For a rough overview, we have put together classic toys for children of different age groups – whether your child likes it, you can only find out for yourself by the motto “Attempt to do it”.
Less is more
In general, babies and toddlers should not be “filled in” with toys. This only leads to sensory overload and boredom. Do not go here on your own, but put yourself in the world of your child. It knows nothing and it takes time and rest to get to know each situation and every object thoroughly. You can then introduce your baby to a new toy when it’s bored with the old one – and that can take days.
Baby rattle and co – toys for the first months of life
Newborns do not need toys, they are completely busy acquainting themselves with the world around them and learning the basics of survival. Toy becomes interesting when the babies start to take an interest in their environment. At the very beginning, funny pendants are useful, which are fixed in the stroller or on the car seat and which the baby can follow with their eyes. If it then starts to grasp, there is the right toy: the so-called “Greifling”. But everything else that baby can handle safely and, above all, put in her mouth, is now appropriate.
This can be rattling, short chains of thick wooden beads or beads with bells. Untreated wood is the material of choice here – and do not worry, even if baby skin rattle on the head, it will not sustain any permanent damage. This is not always the case with plastic toys. Because many plastics contain dangerous substances for babies, which they absorb via the skin or the oral mucosa. Even small stuffed animals – but please without plastic eyes and noses can now be offered. Many babies like to squeeze and suck the stuffed animals.
Toys for babies from six to twelve months
The older your baby gets, the more his ability develops. Soon it can be more than just wild to shake the rattle or the rattle. His demands on toys are growing too. If the baby can crawl or sit, it’s time for the first big blocks. Even simple plug-in system and of course the indispensable balls are now on it.
Toys for toddlers from one to three years
At about one to one-quarter years, most children start walking. Even before, they want to explore their surroundings and become more and more mobile, fine motor skills develop. Building bricks are still highly topical, but can gradually become smaller. To train the motor skills, rocking animals, Bobbycar and later the wheel are now optimal playground equipment. At about two you can solve the first (large part) puzzles. Many children love Duplostones – the great relatives of the classic Lego – and begin to build simple, later increasingly complex sculptures and buildings. Playmobil offers in the series Playmobil 1.2.3 figures without small parts, with which children from 18 months can have fun. For boys – and for some girls – vehicles of all kinds are now of great interest.
Toys for children from three to six
At the age of three children need sand toys. Buckets, shovels, rakes, racks – all this is used with great enthusiasm in the sandbox. For the increasingly mobile little ones, only three-wheelers or wheels, and later also the bicycle (ideally equal without support wheels!) Are needed. To promote cognitive development and team spirit, simple, then more challenging board games can be played. Painting and kneading are also timeless favorite classics. Lego and Playmobil can become a perennial favorite with the child for days.
Primary school children
The children’s games are now always considered, it may also be demanding. Card and dice games as well as board games like “Do not fret you” or “lady” are no longer a problem for the little ones. Moving children now learn to move on inline skaters or ice skates. Now parents should also pay attention to which hobbies their child develops and adapt the toy accordingly. At this age, the desire to own a Game boy or computer for games usually comes up. Please delay this point as long as possible, because the virtual world can quickly become an addictive factor and keep your child from other (moving) games.
